For a long time now, Headway Bradford has wanted to provide a source of information for families and carers of people who are in hospital in Bradford following a brain injury as way of supporting them at a difficult time. For this purpose we have been adapting a booklet produced by King’s College Hospital, London and Headway UK to make it suitable for use in Bradford.
Laura Morton, Occupational Therapist with the Bradford NHS Community Head Injury Rehabilitation Team, and Pam Drake, Secretary of Headway Bradford, have been supported in working on the booklet by Richard Morris of the Communications Team at Headway UK. There has also been input from other members of the Bradford Head Injury Team team and therapists from Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and Airedale Hospital.
Although the booklet is specifically for people who live in Bradford, it does contain some information relating to Leeds General Infirmary and Airedale Hospital because Bradford residents may have been to, or, have to go to, one of these hospitals for surgery or treatment.
The booklet is divided into sections covering the different stages from admission to hospital through to discharge. It has a section on ‘Becoming a carer’ and a section giving ‘Sources of support’. There is also a glossary which explains a lot of common terms used in hospitals.
We plan to ‘launch’ the booklet by having copies available at our two Carers Events on Monday 22 September and Monday 29 September. Following this we will make the booklet available at our other meetings for members to look through. Copies will be distributed to Bradford hospitals, LGI and Airedale Hospital as soon as possible.
