Denise Johnson, member and volunteer at Headway Bradford, is running the London Marathon on Sunday 24 April 2016 to raise funds for our branch. This is the second time Denise is running for our branch – in October 2014 she raised £700 when she ran the Yorkshire Marathon. To read Denise’ story and/or make a donation, please visit www.justgiving.com/Denise-Johnson2. All donations will be very much appreciated and will be a big encouragement for both Denise and Headway Bradford.
Thank you, Denise, for doing this for Headway Bradford – it is greatly appreciated. All the best for the day!
Artist Chris Ellerton came to our February meeting to demonstrate a very simple way of painting beautiful scenes using oils. In just over an hour, Chris produced this scene, showing us simple techniques using mainly big brushes. One of our members was brave enough to have a go. She helped Chris to paint the palm tree.
After pulling crackers, playing a couple of games and having a Christmas Quiz, the raffle was drawn. The main prize was a hamper , followed by several smaller prizes. We enjoyed some good food prepared by committee members, including some very festive buns.
Our photos show fun being had playing the chocolate game – two shakers, each with two dice in, were passed round the table. If a 76 was shaken, the person had to put on a scarf, hat and gloves, pick up a knife and fork and cut themselves a piece of chocolate from the block on the plate. However, the dice continued to go round the table, and if someone else shook a 6 before the person had managed to cut a piece of chocolate, then they had to pass the hat, scarf, gloves, cutlery and plate of chocolate to them. It was surprising how many times a 6 turned up and how many times someone just missed getting a piece of chocolate – but the chocolate all got eaten in the end!
Our new monthly Keighley Coffee Mornings got off to a good start on Wednesday 6 May when 15 people came along and everyone liked the venue. Some members met each other for the first time, whilst others who hadn’t seen each other for a while enjoyed catching up. We look forward to continuing to connect with our members, especially those living in the Keighley area, at these coffee mornings as well as welcoming new people along.
Christmas Party – Tuesday 9 December 2014
at the Kirkgate Centre, Shipley
A game of bingo, a raffle with bumper prizes, a quiz, good food and good company all combined to make our Christmas Party a very enjoyable occasion. Our thanks go to committee member, Maureen, for preparing the raffle prizes, Harold for leading the game of bingo and special thanks to Christine (centre front of group photo) for preparing and donating the lovely food for us to enjoy.
As part of a day trip to Boundary Mills, Colne on 25 November 2014, members of Headway Bradford enjoyed a barge cruise along the canal from Foulridge. The canal was built to follow the contours of the land and the fine, sunny weather made the cruise very pleasant. Before going on the cruise we had enjoyed a fish and chip lunch after doing some shopping on arrival. There was more time for shopping and a cuppa before the coach journey back in the dark.
Our Vice Chair, Steve Butlin, asked Tesco at Queensbury if he could have an information stand at their store, and this request was granted by Steve Dawson, the manager. Steve and his Dad manned the stand for a few hours each day from Monday 22 September to Friday 26 September.
Tesco very kindly gave them food items each day to sell with all proceeds going to Headway Bradford funds. Tesco employee Zoe Hudson helped Steve Butlin and his parents to set the stand up and also donated cookies for them to sell. Steve and his Dad had their flask filled every day by canteen staff, and £140.06 was raised.
Our grateful thanks go to Tesco Queensbury for their wonderful support. Our photos show Steve Butlin on the right of the stand with his Dad on the left, and then Zoe Hudson, Tesco employee, Steve Butlin’s Dad, Steve Dawson, manager at Tesco Queensbury, and Steve Butlin, Vice Chair of Headway Bradford.
A good number came along to our Social/Support Meeting at the Kirkgate Centre, 39A Kirkgate, Shipley, BD18 3EH at 10.30am on Tuesday 12 August. We enjoyed chatting together over a cuppa and having a go at a cryptic quiz called ‘Are you a sweetie?’. Two heads were definitely better than one for this resulting in a lot of right answers!
It is really good to welcome people to our monthly coffee mornings held on the third Thursday of each month at the cafe in St George’s Hall, Bridge Street, Bradford, BD1 1JT from 10.30am – 12pm. Our photos show some of the people who attended on Thursday 24 July 2014.
